Winter Water Damage Repair in Marshalltown, IA

February 24th, 2015 · No Comments

When it’s below zero degrees outdoors with a foot of snow on the ground, one of the last things most homeowners are thinking about is water damage. The water damage experts at ServiceMaster of Marshalltown know better. Not only is water damage in the winter a problem, but the fact that it happens in winter can make the problem harder to deal with.

Believe it or not, two of the more common culprits in causing winter water damage are the insulation in your attic and the gutters on your house. Of course we all know attic insulation helps keep your house warmer and saves on heating costs, and clean gutters move rain water away from your house to prevent water seeping into the basement. But winter water damage? Both factors contribute to ice dams that can result in water damage to ceilings and walls.

Ice dams cause water to back up under shingles and drip down into walls and ceilings. This leakage may go undetected for some time until it results in a water stain on ceilings and walls as well as mold growth.

The insulation in your attic doesn’t contribute to ice dams, but the lack of adequate insulation certainly can. Too little insulation in an attic allows heat to escape through the roof, warming snow to the melting point causing water to run down the roof. Once the water gets to the roof’s overhang where the roof temperature is colder, it refreezes. This creates an ice dam which blocks water from reaching the gutter.

Other causes of heat escaping into the attic and warming the roof include air leaks around chimneys, vent pipes, exhaust fans or skylights. It may not be easy for the average homeowner to detect these areas of heat loss, but most utility companies can do an energy audit on your home to identify heat loss areas and suggest fixes to these problems.

That brings us to gutters. When gutters aren’t cleaned before winter, the buildup of debris prevents melting water from flowing to the downspout before it freezes. Think of your gutter as a river or creek. In winter, the last rivers and creeks to freeze are the most rapidly flowing. The same principle holds true for roof gutters. If the gutter is clear, water has a chance to run off before it freezes.

At ServiceMaster of Marshalltown, we want your home to be free of winter water damage, and hope these tips are helpful. Unfortunately, when heavy snow and cold temperatures are combined, ice dams and related water damage can occur, and quickly.
